We Made It!

We are officially in Crescent City! We haven't seen the inside of our house yet, but we should see it in about twelve hours. In the meantime, I'm too exhausted to pick good pictures of the journey to Crescent City, but here's our girl celebrating her first run/dance on the beach in Crescent City. Other beaches were great, too, but this is the beach she's been waiting for and she took full enjoyment of her first visit. Michael is looking for fun things to show her, none of which really got her attention. Not even the four horses that galloped by us.

Our trip here was mostly uneventful. We had a minor brake failure while in Yosemite which meant that I drove the flattest route out of the mountains to Merced to get them fixed (rotors and pads on both front brakes, but the rear were still fine; that's why it was a minor brake failure and not a complete disaster). The fix went pretty smoothly and I was able to meet up with Michael and Darcy in Stockton that night more or less as planned.

I'll get up some more pictures soon, but we had a beautiful drive up here. Some of the most spectacular scenery will not be represented, however, because there weren't any good places to stop for pictures. We took a lot of very windy, hilly roads between Stockton and Eureka, our last two nights on the road. They were a little tiring to drive, but worth every extra minute and mile.

We're now awaiting our furniture, which should arrive in four or five days. I'll feel better about everything once we see the inside of our house, but Crescent City seems like a nice, small town. It has a lot of hotels and restaurants (including a lot of chains) because of the tourist trade, but also seems to have good municipal services and a range of stores. There are a lot of empty store fronts, too, but I suspect that many small towns do now.

It is more remote than I thought because I did not appreciate what Highway 101 looks like up here. It has frequent sections of single-lane-in-each-direction and many, many twists and turns and ups and downs. It's a little more hilly and curvy than where I learned to drive, but not so much that it's uncomfortable to drive. It does mean that the miles to other, larger towns will not go quite as quickly as the miles between Cima and Las Vegas. These are not 70 MPH posted speed limit roads.

Lucky for us, most of the services we'll need are in town. And tomorrow, we'll start exploring them!

Congratulations! Great picture. By the looks of it, it isn't 90 degrees like it was here!

That's a great great picture! And I love your description-- I forgot how wild coast it is up there, but you're right-- 101 is unrecognizable...
This week I'm homesick and would like to run and play. Yesterday I asked if John would like to slurp noodles with me.

Looks great you guys. It is pretty remote up there, but what a beautiful place to be tucked away in. I hope you love it there.

you know I was thinking about it-- maybe the horses should have dressed up as Wright brothers, or any supporting horses in the Wright Brothers story, and then Darcy would have paid them more attention. Any horses that have nothing to do with the Wright Brothers deserve to be ignored...

Well, so far, so good. I can see what you mean about the horses, Auntie Best. They really should have known that they needed to be part of the Wright Bros saga to get any respect from Darc...um, I mean, Miss Katherine. Although she's loving the dinosaurs these days, too.
